Growing up in North Nashville Nek saw very little opportunity and a myriad of hurdles. Her home was full of chaos and abuse. Nonetheless, Nek imagined a bright future and it came in the form of education. She enrolled in Nashville State Community College, planning to become a lawyer, and was on her way to breaking the generational cycle of poverty that plagued her family and then…she became unexpectedly pregnant. Nek came face to face with the decision to terminate her pregnancy and stay in school, or keep her baby and drop out. The prospect of doing both seemed unrealistic until Nek found Ellas House.
At Ella’s House, Nek received mental health counseling, financial counseling, pregnancy classes, child development classes, and is now enrolled in school at Lipscomb University as a Pre-law student. Most importantly, she found time to dream again. Nek will create a healthy future for herself and her son. She will live her dreams and encourage other young collegiate mothers to do the same.
